Electronics and e-waste in Pearland

Old televisions and computers are the items people keep longest because nobody is sure where they go. In Pearland there is a clear answer for most of them, and a hauler is only needed for the heavy ones, the big batches, or the ones stuck in a closet you cannot reach.

Where Pearland Electronics Can Go

The Stella Roberts Recycling Center at 5800 Magnolia Parkway lists computers, laptops, monitors, printers, keyboards, cellphones, tablets and televisions of every kind, flat panel, tube and projection, among accepted items. It charges a fee for televisions.

Texas law requires television and computer-equipment manufacturers to offer consumers a way to recycle their products. The TCEQ points consumers to the manufacturers’ programs and to TexasRecyclesComputers.org.

The heavy ones

When a Haul Makes Sense

Old tube TVs

A big CRT or rear-projection set is heavy and awkward, and often sits in a cabinet or a game room upstairs.

A whole office

Several computers, monitors, printers and a tangle of cables from a home office or a small business.

Part of a bigger cleanout

Electronics mixed in with a garage, attic or estate. Tell the crew so they keep them separate from the landfill load.

Your data

Wipe It First

A computer, phone or tablet going anywhere should have its data wiped or its drive removed first. Hauling crews and recycling centers are not responsible for what is stored on a device you hand them. Removing a desktop’s hard drive takes a screwdriver and a few minutes.

Questions

Asked About This One

Do they take old printer ink and toner?

Ask. Many office-supply stores take cartridges back; a hauler may or may not.

Is it illegal to throw a TV in the trash in Texas?

This site has not found a Texas rule that bans households from putting a TV in the trash. Recycling is still the better route, and Pearland has a drop-off that takes them.

Can a working TV be donated?

Flat screens that work often can. Tube TVs rarely are accepted anymore.
